While scouting for deer yesterday I was following some game trails through a clearcut. I found 6 piles of Bear poo all within a 200 yard radious of each other. There's probly more but that's just what I saw. the whole area is just crawling with Boysenberies too. The poo was full of berries except for one pile that was full of tree bark. I did not notice any trees that were ripped up in the area I was in though. It looks like I could stand hunt it pretty easy with the bow. not knowing much at all about bear i'd assume a fawn in distress call could work good right about now? What are your thoughts? Did I find a good spot? How can I increase my chances of getting this bear(s)?

Also, there is a creek bottom a 1/4 mile below this clearcut so I'd assume with all that water and plenty of berries the bear(s) wouldn't stray to far for most of the summer.

Use a rifle and hunt the bear. Sounds like you have one or two in the area. They have bionic hearing and sense of smell. Get there early morning before light, and about 3 hours before sunset, especially in August. We seldom see any mid day. Almost always an evening show, but mornings work well too. Set up a trail cam.

Unfortunately I don't own a rifle and truthfully have never shot a bolt action rifle. Only some AR's and an SKS. I'm picking up a 12 gauge soon though. How bout 12 gauge slugs? Although my effective range with the slugs is probly as far as I'd shoot a bear with the bow anyhow.

If you need to borrow a rifled slug barrel I have them for Mossberg 500, 835, and 935. At 55 yards a bear spooked when my father-in-law cocked the hammer on his .45-70. You might get really lucky with a bow, but your odds are much higher if you head out with something that can reach out to at least 100 yards.

If it is near my neck of the woods, you can borrow one of my rifles.

Andy,

Mossberg 500 is what I'm picking up. I appreciate the offer to borrow a rifle but this spot is pretty far north of your place. Hell of an offer though.

Quick question, will the bear more than likely be coming out of the creek bottom when he comes out around dusk?

I have a feeling DosMuchos already has a camera set up in the area.

I've got one set up but it's about a mile away in a timber stand. I'm sure I could find a way to put it on the edge of the clearcut somewhere too.

Find sign just inside the thick of the clearcut and start from there.

From your threads you always seem to be hot on the trail. I'd bet you have a good or memorable season.

Gotta remember that ya need to put your dues in...hunting/fishing aren't an instant gratification hobby.

E Wa bears may be different than W Wa bears. Drive to a 3-5 yo burn. Look at choke cherry bushes with binoc's, see bear in choke cherry bushes...shoot bear.

I'm not a sliver slinger, so rifle killing is way different, but ya make your own luck by getting out and trying new things.
