Re-power, whoo-hoo! No more destroying my ear drums with the venerable ole E'rude. It's all 4-stroke on the Magic Skagit from here on out. It's the 40/30 Yamaha jetdrive. I guess I should have washed the Lund before taking it in to have the new Yami jetdrive bolted to the transom, seeing as how it's so shiny and brand-spanking-new. All electronic; I guess it thinks for itself. New fuel line as recommended for e-gas. I need to get a new fuel tank also. I should also have taken a photo of it, but that would be soooo un-Salmo of me.

I need to go drive it around to get those first 20 hours on it.

Meanwhile, anyone want about a can and a half of 50:1 outboard fuel mix that I have no further use for? Not to mention, there's an aged 50 hp jetdrive E'rude sitting in the corner of the garage. Starts on the first rev and runs good, for 41 years now. Wonder if it'll sell.

Congrats on the new engine but...

Did you consider the new Evinrude E-Tec? They have come a long way in the past decade... let alone the last 4 decades.

The superiority of two-stroke torque -especially with a jet pump- is beyond debate.

You made a great choice. 4 stroke Yamaha is the way to go.

Those 4 strokes are "whisper Quiet".....if not on to big a boat, should have the "get up and go" to run the Skagit.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Tohatsu 35 TLDI jet is a great alternative to the Yamaha 30 jet... Way more power and lighter. Worth the difference in price.

LOL. Ya gotta love the Internet.

Congrats, Salmo. I don't think you can go wrong with a new Yami 4 stroke.

Thanks guys. This was a big deal for me. I've been thinking about it for a long time, but the old E'rude kept on chugging along. I decided to re-power this year because of the $$ windfall I received a few months ago, combined with our IRS refund made it a painless expense.

Yes, I did consider alternatives. My boat is a small skiff, a Lund SSV 16' that weighs only 390 pounds dry. I considered: E-tech - heavier and you have to buy the jet pump separately for an extra $1900. Mercury - also heavier and you have to buy the jet pump separately. Honda - heavier and have to buy the jet pump separately. Suzuki - heavier and have to buy the jet pump separately. Tohatsu - the only other brand that comes stock with jet drive, lighter, possibly the best alternative, but zero local performance repuation feedback. My local dealer hasn't sold a single one; he would like to; Tohatsu would like him to stock one; etc., etc., but I could not locate one single owner who could provide either positive or negative feedback. Conversely, every Yamaha owner I've talked with provided highly positive feedback. The Tohatsu might have been an excellent choice also, but I can't afford to be the south sound guinea pig.

Meanwhile, anybody need a few gallons of 2-stroke mixed gas? I don't think I can use it in my chain saw.

That about sums it up. Well done.

It sure idles quiet, much quieter and smoother so than my 4hp kicker!.

I like this motor, have a friend that "trolls" with his all the time. 60/40 Yamaha, hell of a motor.

Redd D,

The Lodge is wider as well as longer than my Lund and can carry more transom weight. I think you have the perfect motor. Believe me, 2Many pushed me hard for the 60/40. I would like to have the full 40 hp max that my boat is rated for, but alas it's too heavy, and needs a 5" higher transom, which by itself isn't that big a deal.

2Many,

Not yet. Just trailered it home yesterday after work. I'll take it out this weekend for some running time. Might even fish.

Twitch,

New outboard don't cry and poop. But yes, like a new addition to the family.

My E-Tec cried and pooped. So, I adopted it right out of the family.

SG,

Do your self a huge favor and get ahold of FP on this board and get one of his killer lil oil adapter Gizmo's. It really makes changing oil in the yami 4 stroke fun and no mess. I have bought 4 of them now for gifts to all my buddies who own yami's. Good luck,

SZ,

Thanks for the reminder. I was just thinking about that yesterday. Never had to do the outboard motor oil change exercise before. I'll get right on it. I was going to go out and give the new motor some exercise today, but woke up with some kind of case of the crud, so maybe a mid-week cruise.
