Don't be so quick to place all the blame on the Queets fishermen. They get a whole 1 day a week to fish! If you have been in the Clearwater drainage you would also know that the DNR has let most of the forests be "nuked" over the last 20 years. Also, sport fishermen have taken wild fish from the system for years. As for hatchery fish there never were any in the system except for a occasional Salmon river stray.

Call The guide Shop in Orofino, ID. 208-476-3531. They are really good about giving out accurate info. I was there six weeks ago for three days. The fishing was not real hot as far as a lot of fish being hooked however, I did manage to take three two at 18lbs and another just over 20lbs. My poor buddy only hooked one 6 pounder. We were fishing out of my sled using eggs. Hope this helps.

Trout, you're not the first person on this BB to confuse Clearwater rivers. Keep in mind that the one usually referred to here is on the Olympic Peninsula and is a tributary of the Queets River. So far as Idaho's Clearwater, two 18s and a 20 make for a fairly satisfying trip. Your experience pretty much typifies the run over here this season -- there weren't scads of fish, but there were some nice ones.

Funny how the Native Americans always say that it is the problm of the white man with catching all of the fish and then the whiteman says it is the indians. I have been fishing these rivers for years and there wasn't a problm of fish on these rivers UNTIL the Bolt Giveaway. Maybe one day is to much for nets to be in that river or any other. Maybe with the the dismal up and down season in the Forks area the nets should be pulled. The reason to keep the nets in is maybe the Quiliutes and other local tribes need to help each other to catch the extra 2000 lbs. of native steelhead needed to catch halibut instead of squid or maybe Pike Street Market needs another order, or maybe the great Native protectors of our fish runs, need to buy more nets in order to protect their heritage. I know what it is, they need to buy bigger nets for the springers that are about to start showing, but then they can protect the wild steelhead stock as they make their down river trip back to the sea. First they catch them on the down river trip and pitch them in the brush so they won't be counted, the hell with it, they never count on the quota anyway. Our great native protectors will watch and make sure that there is at least the chance they will get the last Native Steelhead and then turn the lights out when they have caught the last one and blame it all on the sportsman. "Halibut anyone".

Cpt.Mike, I've never seen someone that is so ill informed about this subject. You might have been around for a while but it seems you should have learned something that is correct about this issue. You've only made 6 post so you probaly wouldn't know about the days and days we have discussed about this issue. Tight Lines

This is a tough one to reply to because no one is right and no one is wrong. There are alot of variables to look at. first I know the Quinalt guides that I sell hooks to are out numbered by the netters in the tribe so when ever they try to get something done in there favor or in favor of sportsman it is hard for them to get it done if at all. On the part about the Queets river being netted I drive that stretch of highway allot and have never crossed that bridge without seeing nets in the water!, maybe there are people netting it illegally,if they are they should enforce themselves to help there image with the sportsman. On the other hand the d.n.r has let the clearwater drainage get so over logged that there is setiment getting into the streams, there are not large enough setbacks to keep the water tempatures down and the state let us sportsman retain wild steelhead there for years, which should never have happend in the first place. We are at the point now were we all need to start working towards the common goal of fish first then everything can fall into place after that. Believe me Letty, Tater,Robin and all the other Quinalt guides know the value of there fish as a sportfish, if they did'nt do you think they would be out there in the pouring rain with a bunch of us white motherfuckers whose forefathers put them on reservations, I don't think so. So lets put the fish first and start from there. Peace Superfly

Sorry for asking about the river!Just wanted a little info, not a pissin contest!!If everyone feels so strongly about the Raping of our rivers you would probably do more good by directing your comments and feelings to those who are in control rather then to one another!!!

Superfly, About your comment of a net always in the Queets when you drive by... I think that what you are seeing are the tie ups for the net. The tie up lines are tied to corks so the fishermen can get at them. If you just glance it would look like a net. Next time if it is not Sun thru say Tuesday, stop and check it out. Many of my clients have made the same mistake when crossing the Quinault with me at Taholah. Oh yeah, how can I see a pic of Thor Built jet boats on line. Thor built sent me to some Kodac site but it wouldn't load?? [This message has been edited by potter (edited 03-19-2000).]
