I recently hit up some favorite Kona haunts with my buddies Nate and Frank. We left Honokohau harbor before daybreak to get the early bite. Just after sunrise we saw an odd disturbance and cruised over to check it out –

We quickly saw what was causing the disturbance -

The day brought steady action on a variety of cool species including some new ones for me – trevally, hogfish, jobfish and big (delicious!) goatfish of several types. We dunked fresh bait, threw lures and cast flies to mix up the action –

This was followed by lots of shoreline fishing and plenty of cold beer at our favorite beaches –

Aloha.

Outstanding Mr. Mingo. Like a trip to an exotic aquarium but with some cool stories and fishing porn to go along. Thanks for sharing, I needed a vitamin D boost.

Hogfish?

Man, talk about a face only a mother could love. Reminds me of a few of Stam's recent lady friends.

I agree. Mingo wins the award for ungliest fish here at PP.

Awesome report!

Good call Coley, it's a Hawaiian Hogfish. Another large member of the wrasse family, called Table Boss locally. My buddy freaked when I brought it in, he said "that friggin' thing may be the state record". We released it so it doesn't matter, they tend to carry ciguatera so are too damn dangerous to eat anyway. When we got back, I looked up the state record. I think I beat it by a couple pounds. No matter, it was a fun day and I'd never kill a fish I'm not going to eat just to crow about something like that. Ha ha ha, yes, a mug only a mum could love. Good fighters though, we caught another that day nearly as large and the biggest weke nono I caught was the biggest my buds had seen in seven years. Not many days are like that.

Thanks for the positive vibes fellas. Good times.
