We all know bloody tuna, herring, sardine, anchovy and anise scents work well for spring chinook but ive heard of people using garlic scent for fall kings and am curious if anybody has had success with garlic for springers? Im looking to make my bait stand out a little more when fishing pressured waters. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I use garlic on my egg cures for springers. Works great. However, I'd have 3 or 4 different scents and baits on you. They are picky and sometimes will want garlic and other times they won't touch it... Garlic works great though and it's one of my first choices.

Thanks for the input. I normally have the standard scents on hand. I plan on plunking tuna balls next week and wanted to try adding garlic scent to them to give my bait a different scent than the other baits around mine

Bang!
Shrimp Formula is a favorite of mine.
Prolly not Coast Guard approved with the slick that it makes.

grin

Edit:
Or pure anise oil from a restaurant supply store.
Seems to be more powerful than the garden-variety stuff at the tackle store.

For spring Chinook I have found that every scent you can think of will work...for about one fish, maybe two.

Then you better have another one, or five, on hand to figure out what the next one is that they want.

Garlic is no different wink

Fish on...

I agree with this statement. Garlic can be great but do not put all you "eggs" in one basket... I have made that mistake in the past.... Same with tuna, Krill, and others. However, I do feel anise is the most consistent scent I have used. 2cents

What Toff just said.

You can always pull a Clancy and use some candlefish....if you can find it.

All kings eat candle fish.

ALL.

Pretty sure you'd catch every springer in river with a bait of UEC topped with a chunk of candlefish.

When springers are in a holding pattern with pressure, they can be finicky so mixing different scents with your bait is important. Backbounce sardine wrap plugs with anise, squid, garlic, sandshrimp can be productive. Same with a big glo' with eggs/prawn eggs/sandies tuna in oil

Ive found that springers are way more aggressive when they are on the move. Plunking with almost anything mentioned above will ring a bell.

Anyone try the anise in grocery stores? Picked up some a couple months ago and noticed it was cut with alcohol?? Don't know if that would make much different or not

As far as putting all my eggs in one basket, I stick to my cure that works and add scent on the water.

Great input from all of you, thanks again. Hopefully running garlic will make my bait stand out from the rest, and if not its all part of figuring it out and thats what makes fishing fun.

Tight lines to all

UEC is out of production… functionally extinct.

Candlefish carry PSP and are now postulated to be THE culprit in the widespread demise of AK salmon stocks. Please DO NOT use them for bait in our favorite springer haunts, lest they too go extinct.

Sardine wrapped plugs, tuna wrapped plugs, all get just shrimp scent in my boat with a splash of WD. And changed out every 30 min, and I only use DT and Trapper. And even touched a couple Saturday in the down pour.
