I love it. We need 10 times the amount of officers we have now.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Fisheries & Wildlife, with a specialty option in Natural Resource Law Enforcement. I graduated 10 years ago. I have given up on even trying to get a job in this field. Last time openings were flown (Oregon) over 800 applications were received in less than 4 hours. That was 2+ years ago.

Do not know what you are currently doing but if you are not in some form of law enforcement have you considered that as a less direct approach to your goal? Maybe a police officer job where they send you through the mandatory training and provide some OJT which would enhance your marketability for the job you really want?

There are too many angry WSP drop outs for a fisheries biologist to have much of a chance. When they gave full police power to WDFW enforcement, it was a game changer ( pun intended).

Milt Larry or Bushbear can correct me if I'm wrong but, I believe the WDFW requires a college degree where as the WSP does not. WSP does pay more for a degree than without though.

Here is the WDFW link for pertinent entry level WDFW LE position: http://wdfw.wa.gov/enforcement/careers/entry_level.html

Basics:

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree (natural resource science or criminal justice preferred)
OR
Two-year college degree + 2 years paid, full-time natural resource experience
OR
Two-year college degree + three years active military duty within the last nine years

Then there is the Lateral for experienced police officers:
http://wdfw.wa.gov/enforcement/careers/lateral.html

Basics:

Minimum Requirements:

Two-year college degree
AND
Two years full time law enforcement experience
AND
Current CJTC commission or equivalent

It would seem that a Lateral applicant with a four year natural resources degree, a minor in police science AND has a current police position/CJTC commission and good work history would seem to be a very strong candidate.

Edit: Personally I encourage folks with a resource management educational background to get into WDFW LE.

I went through the reserve Sheriff's Deputy program for a few years in Whatcom County. Lots of the guys who were in my class did it as a way to break into law enforcement, while I just did as a volunteer activity.
