I've been doing quite a bit of cutthroat fishing in the north sound recently.
I've encountered quite a few surf smelt lately and realized I don't really have these dialed in pattern wise. I'd like to few in my box for this summer.
Anyone have a salty smelt pattern they'd like to share?
Thanks,
SF

Probably the closest to smelt pattern I've been successful with is the Shock and Awe tube fly hooking up with Coho.

I've got a few smelt patterns in my fly box, but haven't really fished them, when my Rolled Muddler pattern works so well for Cutts.

That would certainly work for a smelt imitation Chromer, but I might need a bit more then a 6 wt to launch it into action....

I wonder if a Clouser Minnow would be close. Tied in sliver/white with plenty of flash it may be close enough. I know.. it's a "minnow" not a "smelt", but smelt are generally more streamlined in their profile than minnow. I think it could work.

Was going through my boxes of flytying stuff over the weekend and found 10 or so flies tied for saltwater coho fishing, tied Joe Butorac style. He did a few tying classes at Ted's probably 15 years ago.

JG,
I always liked his patterns. I wish I had an opportunity to watch him tie some of his patterns before he passed away.

If memory serves, Joe devised a number of extremely simple ties that looked really fishy. It's a small PP world that Joe had acquaintances here.
