I'm looking at picking up centerpinning and had a question. I've never done this before but should have all of my gear in time to wet a next weekend for chum or early steelhead.
How aggressive or light are you guys palming (not sure the technical term) the reel while fighting a fish? I have not had much luck finding anything on that on the net or youtube.
Thanks in advance. After next week end I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

You'll get the feel for it over time. Chum will be a good exercise for for you. Just don't lock the spool down. When they want to run, let them run.
You may loose a few fish, you may even break off. But, keep at it, and you'll get the feel for it. It will all come together.

RB, I'll be another pin-rookie out spool'in this week. You report I'll report & everybody can get a chuckle out of our pain. I'm trusting that long flexible C/P rod will act as a big shock absorber for my antics on the reel. c/22

You will know exactly how much pressure to apply after your second fish hooked.

You will know exactly how much pressure to apply after your second fish hooked. I'm a slow learner. It took me three years. The hook set was my biggest issue. Those rods are limber, so you really have to pull back to get a good hook set. After that, staying on my feet was the second issue. I broke off a nice Hoh fish sliding down on my butt on of the gravel mounds. I don't think anyone was watching then. C/22 I've had my share of antics with the CP rod. It's all Fun.

You can be as aggressive as your line will hold up to. You can completely lock down the spool with very little pressure and make this fish just wear themselves out in seconds if you fish heavier rod/line. I fish 14 sufix siege and 12lb leaders which is alot heavier than I normally fish with conventional gear.

Cool, I'm set @ 12 main & 10 leader. This IM6 Raven reminds me of a 11' 6"' fly rod in a 7 or 8 weight.
Otter be fun.

If anyone is having trouble locating dne's.
Berrysbait.com in BC carries and ships DNE floats to the US.

I'm pretty sure there are boxes and boxes of DNEs at Ted's in Lynnwood.

That's good to know. Maybe on my second batch I'll give them a call. I'm all geared up. Hoping to get out Saturday.
Thanks to Mooch for the youtube video on the BC Cast.

Due to the kids getting sick a d the rain, I disn't get out. I did get a little bit of casting practice in.
I had issues reeling back. The line would wrap up around the reel in a couple different directions. I'm assuming that I put too much line on the reel. I stripped some down and hopefully th at will remedy it.
I started out with all of my casts landing at about 10 and 11 o'clock. I guess I wasn't releasing the reel early enough. I started to build up a little more momentum and release the reel and I was hitting 12 and 1 o'clock consistantly.
I'm going to have to invest in some wool gloves cause man this reel gets cold.

Use heavier weight than you think you want to use...everything will be easier then...you have to get a bend in the rod to load it up or you won't be casting very far!
Fish on...

so unlike the Cleardrifts. c/22 I never understood why people would throw a plastic float at a rocky river? Chuck, if you can hit the water part of the river 100% of the time then Cleardrifts are the ticket. c/22
