Howdy--I've been lurking around here for quite a few months, and I guess it's about time to jump into the fray once in awhile. Great board. I fish the middle/south sound, but just got my boat this year so I'm on the learning curve bigtime. I'm pretty good at catching spurdogs (dogfish) if any of you guys want tips, he he

Sharks have a totally different metabolism than boney fish, and the down side of eating them is--if they are not treated right--they have an ammonia taste. It's important to bleed them quick (tail or gill cut) and throw them on ice right away. Then I just filet them, carve out the red part, and soak them in milk to counteract any remnant acid taste. They are good, but I don't think they are as good as some other sharks (e.g. blacktips). The lack of bones is very cool. You can fry them like fish and chips and they are fine. They have a slight tang compared to other fish, but its very similar to a slight bit of lemon and is not offensive. This species is commercially fished all over the world and considered highly desireable most places. Spurdog is the English term for these guys. It's also interesting that they are long-lived--a mature dogfish could easily be as old are you are. My son likes to catch and eat these more than salmon (probably because we seem to be able to troll for hours with no action). Tight lines.

Welcome to the board Spurdog! Thanks for the recipe, I have always been curious about eating them, maybe someday I will.

Greetings Spur Dog, My father always told me that dog fish were good to eat but Mom did all the cookin and didn't want any thing to do with those " darn things " Since child hood I have eaten dogfish on numerous ocassions and like you have found it too be quite good Wdfw had a pamphlet out years ago on how to prepare it was a popular item for awhile haven't seen one around in years (the pamphlet that is)
Another often overlooked use for dog fish is it is a very good halibut bait and I emphasize very good. So the next time you are out and you figure there might be a barn door about try a 10 inch filet of dog fish on a circle hook and see what you come up with.
