A beautiful fish no doubt, but that measurement just does not jive with that picture. I bet they didn't have a ruler with them, so they fidgeted around with a strap or a length of mono, and tried to measure it with that, and fudged the length. Just a hunch. Not trying to hate on it, because it is a fine specimen (and I'm jealous), but when it goes to print it needs to be metrically legit!

"Metrically legit"

Is that a pathology term?

Regardless, I like it and plan to steal it for future use.

Dear Mr. Cryfish,

As Mr. Devo posted, "i saw that yesterday, its nowhere near the state record tho as it says... English Pete's fish made that thing look like a smolt..."

Please do not post pictures of minnows, this is a serious fishing site.

Beautiful fish, and a great picture. I was impressed when I heard the story last year a couple days after it was caught. At the time I heard it was "about 35 lbs."

If it really was, the picture does it no justice.

However, if the picture is not distorted, for it to be 46.5 inches, the spread between his pinkey finger and index finger cradling the fish would have to be over 8 inches!

Gray Struznik (the guy holding the fish) is 6'6" tall so the picture of him holding the fish makes it harder to do the fish justice than with most average size guys. I've seen him land 34" steelhead that look like trout in his hands.

If Gray says it was 46" I have no reason to doubt him at all...he has nothing to gain by exaggerating the dimensions and isn't one to make things up.

They did have to measure with mono as his tape was back at the raft and he didn't want to subdue the fish any longer than required.

Even Oregomers would laugh at 46 from that picture.

And for reference, the chinook in my avatar is supposedly only 4.5" longer than the steelhead in question?

I read that the girth was measured with a piece of mono and later taped at 22", which is very much on the small side for a 46" length. But it is a slender looking steelhead. It's a large steelhead, no matter what formula one uses to estimate its size.
