I started the chinook season breaking the hook at the eye of a kingfisher lite. Ended straightening the hook of a Gforce spoon pulled out of traffic. Is there a non stainless option?

I've been using this one in size 1 for steelhead.
They've been very good and they run a little big as compared to other mfrs.
http://www.sportco.com/store/pc/Mustad-U...k-771p67101.htm

Benefits...

Very large open eye
Point is inboard of parallel to shank (has to travel "over center")
Offset point
Sticky sharp

These hooks have everything done, right out of the package.
I have not tried them in the larger sizes.
For my summer hardware campaign I have not found anything better.

Edit:
It's like they took Japanese live bait hook design and applied it to Northwest lure hook requirements.
Well done Mustad.

I agree with direct drive. I've been using those mustads on my spoons for a couple seasons and I love them. Last season I started using them on pretty much everything else that needs a hook swap too. They're the best buzzbomb hook I've found so far for chasing silvers off the beach too.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The design of the Gibbs spoon hook looks similar to the Mustad.
I guess the metal has to be hard enough to close the open eye, yet not so hard as to be brittle.

I run the big river open eye hooks on my spoons as well. I also tie in a split ring and stainless barrel swivel which helps the hook roll with the fish better.... I change the hooks on my gear probably every 2-3 trips at a max as well.

Agree. . .they don't sharpen up all that well with the shape of the point as it is, but if you're good with a stone you might get one touch up in. That said, if in salt water, I usually just chuck it and pinch on a new one after a couple trips. Life's too short to fish with crappy hooks.

Mark me down as a Sickle Hook Hater.
Just don't like how it concentrates tension at the bends and hate the beak point.
It's a passing fad.
