Ive fished them raw and done ok but I have some roe with a special cure that has been really getting the bites and am out of roe. How about the same cure on prawns? Any advice or thoughts?

I have had great success on chunks of raw skrimp cured in Pautzke's Fire Cure under a float either dead weight or on a jig. Not sure about using the same cure you would use for eggs, I'd be worried it might dry the skrimps out too much.

I have marinated them in a little anise oil and pink dye and caught fish. I've also caught steelhead on cocktail shrimp and a corkie.

Best steely day of my life was with some tiger prawns I found at the bogi launch I cured overnight with some amermans steel cure sprinkled over them.

I cut them into bait size pieces put them in ziploc and sprinkle cure on top fill bag with air and shake. A little cure goes a long way with the prawns. I'll add egg juice, anise, or other smelly for fun but the cure alone is fine.

I also usually put in a bit of salt to toughen them up a little. Works on the cocktail shrimp the same way.

I use them all the time....matter of fact Safeway just had a sale on the 51-60 count to the pound......I bought 4 pounds. I keep them frozen until I need them, night before I take "what I think I'll use", let defrost, take sharp knife......cut them long wise....take a fork, poke holes in the prawns....put in plastic baggie, put your favorite scent on them......leave them over night....

Don't forget to take them with you !!!!!!

Op Fisher and i used to have a concoction we learned from a guy that cleaned o ur clocks on the Vedder River one day. Hed prolly kill me for revealing the prawn secret but i will give the dye color. It was bad azz magenta bait dye with rock salt and a special flavor added. We would cut it in little size morsels and called it "shromp". It was a go to for years. Lately ive gotten lazy and just add salt to small raw chunks of 51/60 size tiger prawns. This has never let me down but i of course will always take sand shrimp over every other steelhead if available. wink

Yes to all of the above. 50 - 60 count prawns cut into bite size chunks, rock salt to toughen, scent to smell and dye to color. I usually don't bother with dye and just use some anise & crawfish or shrimp scent. I let them sit for 12 - 24 hours and drain off any pulled out water. Like Drifter, I buy the big frozen bags @ Costco and only pull out what I need. Once cured, any leftovers can be keep in the fridge for a long time (keep em' in the original salt). Since I never catch fish, I always have leftovers. Works for me. I guess...

Thoughts: Can't hurt to cure up some prawn chunks with that cure and see if it made a difference between that and uncured prawns. Next, cure some prawns in a commercial cure and see how they fish compared to your special cured prawns.

I've never really bothered to use cured prawns for winter runs, as I probably never needed to. I'll always default to sand shrimp as the go-to winter run bait. I just don't like dealing with egg goo.

Besides - you tipping your flies now with prawn chunks, or what? smile

Now, as for summer runs, I know that specific cured prawns are MONEY and will out fish a lot of presentations. Those fish are in warmer waters, a lot more aggressive, will chase a brightly cured prawn out of it's holding waters and will react in a positive way towards some cures over others. Boondogging or drifting bare cured prawn chunks for summer runs is the schnizzle. I use a combination of cures and some added ingredients for summer run prawns, all of which I'm not willing to divulge that information.

Such a science to curing bait.
Now if the fishery managers showed half the intelligence.

Unfortunately, our fisheries managers:

a) Are not qualified scientists for the most part, let alone qualified in fisheries sciences.
b) Do not know the science. At least nothing more than anyone coming out of a university with a bachelor of science should know.
c) When presented with actual good scientific results, theories, or examples of good science by a qualified and good fisheries scientist underneath them, the managers choose to make a decision based on their own gain, rather than what is good for the fish or the resource.
d) Their egos turn them deaf, dumb, and blind.

Sometimes, I wish I didn't know what we really goes on at WDFW and our fisheries "management".

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

PS - not knocking our truly smart and retired/ex WDFW science folks here. I'm referring to the new school breed of upper level management, the likes of which, will never be seen or heard from here.
