H2B visas for unskilled labor aren't really a bad thing really - IMO. But I'm positive they are rubber stamped for the rich and powerful - which is kinda unfair. For the educated, it's the 3 year H1B technical visas that are the killers. 65,000 high paying technical jobs that should be going to Americans, but our tech companies are too greedy to pay out US wages so they offshore to India for a 1/4 the price. This hurts job prospects for new grads and kills careers if you are over 45. "We worsened our services while proving poorer quality, but hey we saved the Share Holders some coin this quarter! Let's give ourselves raises with the money we saved! YEEHAW!"
Anyhoo....
H2B Visas explained:
The H-2B visa is a temporary visa for a foreign employee in a non-agricultural field. The visa has to be requested by the employer, with specific information about the work the employee will be involved in and for how long. The employer must also show that the work being done does not compete with a U.S. worker in a similar position. This ensures that U.S. jobs are not at risk of being lost to immigrants willing to work for less.
