We drove back from eastern Oregon yesterday. I was amazed by the sheer number of nets set in the Columbia. I would estimate at least 200 from up by Boardman down to Bonneville. It was as windy and rough as I have ever seen the gorge. We saw a couple boats trying to tend thier nets by the mouth of the Deschutes River. It was so rough I can't imagine trying to sort thru a net. Some of the wind gusts were over 50mph and the waves were 4-6 feet with the whitecaps being blown off by the wind. It makes you wonder how many of the wild fish are caught in the process with so many nets. It would have to be many times more than the sports C&R mortality just by sheer numbers of nets. I saw a few bank anglers below John Day Dam but they were on the Washington side and too far to see any activity with old eyes. There was a sign at Celilo Park for salmon for sale.
