Anyone had any problems with their T-8 and corrosion. Almost my entire tiller is full of corrosion. I have talked to one other guy with the same problem, only on a different part of the motor. Just curious as to if this is a wide spread problem?

I've got a little under the hood. My T8 is mounted on my O/S bracket and gets a pretty good dunking because it sits so low. There has been more than once where it was completely submerged from a wave . The hood fits pretty tight so its pretty water tight for the most part.

I take the cover off and clean it as best I can and hit everything under the hood with Corrosion Block. It works pretty well.

I don't have any other corrosion on it. I do spend some time making sure it gets a good wash and rinse every time it sees saltwater.

Only problem I have had with mine is that it has a bad thermostat in it causing it to burn oil upon start up and the messed up thing is the bolt for the shift cable thats inside the cover always breaks every 6 months or so.

You think that they would correct that problem.....

I have a T9.9 that appears to have the same problem. All looks good except a few different areas on the tiller. I thought it to be bad paint prep. I also treat it with corrosion upon cleaning. Otherwise its only cosmetic.

Jerry,

I have never broke mine but it has came loose before. Wonderful thing to find when on the river. It's part of my pretrip check now. Thought about using some thread lock but I thought about braking it off and it has remained factory. I have not had any corrosion problem. I'm keeping an eye on that too. The T-8 is still the best kicker motor I have ever owned.

I thought mine was just a cosmetic spot too, until I scraped on it with my fingernail and all of the paint peeled off to reveal the corrosion.

I'm seriously considering dumping the money to get one of these as a kicker. Seems like the high thrust is highly favored. Thanks for the heads up on problems! One question though for T8 and 9.9 readers. They seem to be the same weight and the 9.9 is not much more money. Do T8 owners ever wish they had a little more juice? Any pro and con opinions?

The T8 is plenty for all but the biggest boats.

It'll push my 20' Seahawk at 7 mph.

A 25 wouldn't push it any faster.

Its called hull speed. Basically as fast as the boat will go if it won't get on plane. Not enough power to overcome the resistance of the water.

A 25 certainly won't plane my boat so it won't push it any faster than the T8.

My T-8 pushes my 24 invader around just fine! I have not had the corrosion problem yet, but have had a buddies fixed under warranty. Might have something to do with the "Galvanic process", maybe an electrical leak problem. Just a suggestion.

I have an F-8 Yamaha with the same corrosion problem on the tiller handle. Rest of the motor looks good though. I guess once it get's bad enough I might have to buy a new handle.

I just purchased a 9.9 and it was only $200 more than the t-8. I shopped around including the boat show but Bayside beat the competition by $600-$800, an amazing deal (electric start, no power tilt).

Just finished the break in, need to change the lower unit oil. They have the screws on so tight there is nothing that will turn them. Any suggestions?

Try one of the slotted screwdriver bits that attach to a 3/8" drive ratchet.

FishNg1, how can I check for an electrical leak problem?

Also, the T-8 pushes my 20" Wooldridge along just fine. I don't think I would gain anything by going up to the 9.

If these are elec. start, or charger equiped engine's, I will assume they are grounded. If they are pull start and non charging, they still need to be grounded to the boat elec. system. It sound's like there is a "bonding" problem if most of the corosion is limited to the tiller handle. Bonding problems can exist on almost any metalic part that is isolated from electrical grounding. I would be willing to bet that this problem could be eliminated by adding a small bonding wire or strap that connects the main body to the isolated tiller handle. Always use a zinc chromate primer on bare aluminum. As good as Yami's are, they are still not perfect. The first decade+ of yami's were a total joke!, they have improved "drastically"!

Exactly what Fishguy says, I think that it would be a grounding problem or maybe a loose leaking wire below deck or somewhere touching water.

Mike, dont get it fixed until after our Sno-King members only derby this weekend. Gives us a better chance. I remember years ago my kicker broke a cable in the tiller handle at Neah Bay. I ran it in and got it fixed. Somehow they shorted a wire and it would bite the crap out of you touching the handle. It actually hurt.

TMR360, I assume you are talking about Bayside marine in Everett. Can you recommend anyone there to talk to about getting a good price on a T8?
