Hi All,

Well, doesn't look like I'll get much Springer action again this year and will miss the Summer runs all together. frown My ship departs at the end of the month for a 5 1/2 month jaunt to the Western Arctic. Not a lot of time for port calls this trip, but since I'm "Queen of the Munson" (one of our small boats... MY personal favourite!) I will make SURE I have time to wet a line and drop a pot or two!

Anyhoo, I've only been Halibut fishing once (got a little guy so small he qualified as bait! laugh ) and have never fished Salmon in salt outside of Puget Sound (eons ago as a kid) or off the Columbia... So if you guys (and gals!) would like to share your abundant knowledge with me regarding gear, methods and what-not, I would most appreciate it! (As would my shipmates who are thinking there will be NO morale this trip... if fishing isn't morale, I don't know what is!)

We'll be working around Dutch Harbor, Nome and Barrow. I have a relatively respectable chunk of change to spend on morale fishing gear too, so I'd love some "gotta' have" tips for that as well. Thanks so much. Hopefully we'll have internet access for most of this trip and I won't miss out on the Message Board. smile

Love, Elsa

I don't know if you can discuss this but I was wondering what your mision is up there?I was part of the trawler fleet for too many years and was wondering if you were part of enforcement?

If you find yourself at Crowly dock in DH, hike up the stream there,up to the falls, and there used to be a fishing pole hidden at the top of the falls used for moral purposes during offloads. It is wrapped in a black gbag and a red t-shirt. laugh

I found last year jigging an 8 ounce white Point Wilson dart was the most enjoyable way to fish for

Thanks for the responses!

ltlCLEO, we're an Arctic Research vessel. Thankfully I don't have to play the whole LE/Fisheries gig. Of course, we're still capable, but that's not our primary mission. smile Thanks for the tip on the rod... if I get up there, I'll make a point of it to go look and let you know if it's still there! laugh

Thanks Jerry, I'll give the PW dart a try. Gonna' head to Fife tomorrow and "window shop" for the ship's morale stuff (as well as my own!).

Love, Elsa

Hey LittleBear,

Best of luck to you up there. I've got an idea for you to consider, check your schedule and try to line up a guide in one of the areas you'll be in. No better way to get the "Lay of the Land" so to speak. you said you have a respectable chunk of change that would be an excellent way to spend some of it. Once you know your way around you can show the other guys how it's done.

Anyway, like I said good luck and tight lines.

If you have a port of call at Nome, you can go just a couple miles south of town in a cab & fish the Nome River. Lots of easy bank access, fish from surf line to the road bridge 1 mile upriver.
Throw hardware (mostly spoons). Just depends on the month which run of salmon going through.
