in the past i remember the state stopping tour busses coming out of reno looking for liquor and making people pay the mark up. so with the state out of the liquor business is it OK to bring in liquor from out of state or is there still a state tax that must be paid??

State still collects taxes on booze. I think they might even be collecting more taxes starting June 1, hence part of the increased price. I have never heard of them actually stopping busses and checking but if it happened in the past I would not be surprised if they kept doing it.

I'm about a 1/4" shy of thinking the liquor initiative should have also eliminated the state liquor control board. So much for my liberal persuasions.

Had to pick up chow for the dogs this morning and while zipping through Safeway I noticed some booze on the aisle ends. As I drink Bloody Mary's ( Mr. T ) with hot sauce I buy cheap Vodka as the Russian is wasted in the fire storm of spice's. They did not have what I usually buy but did have another that I have purchased.

So at the state store I was 23.95 but Safeway it was 13.99 minus two for the Club Card so 11.99 plus 6.60 tax for a total of 18.59 which was 5.36 under the state store. That is the good news. The bad is several higher priced brands would be more with the tax.

Lady behind me had a bottle of Bourbon and lord when she saw the tax amount about had a fit. Seems she never had seen the state taxes broken out before. It should be interesting to see this play out as posted in another thread the stores are going to sue the state Liquor Board on efforts to limit competition and drive up prices.

Costco:
Pendleton 1.75 L ($46.99 x 20.5%) + $6.60.
Makers Mark 1.75 L ($46.49 x 20.5%) + $6.60.

And now we have access to the Kirkland signature series brands of which Costco has a 15 year old Scotch made by Macallan and the Vodka by Grey Goose.

So, all looked cheaper than state prices and Kirkland Series even cheaper.

The state prices as of yesterday (last day) were:

1.75 Pendleton: $44.28 + $15.67 tax = $59.95
1.75 Makers: $46.77 + $16.18 tax = $62.95

Just tried the Kirkland Series 7 year old Bourbon and it's pretty good. 1 liter $35 after taxes.

Lot's of people were snatching up the Kirkland Tequila and Vodka.

So Pendleton is more if I remembered the price correctly. I drink Makers Mark so it seems only pennies cheaper. Might have to switch to Kirkland brands.

I made a quick stop at Costco and Fred Meyer on the way home from coho fin clipping at the Humptulips hatchery. Couldn't resist taking a look at the new liquor offerings. The shelf prices are pretty attractive for some, but then you have to add the $2.77 per liter and the 20.5% liquor tax, and that Kirkland 15 yr old Scotch from McCallan is $58.99 + 12.09 + 2.77 = $73.85. I decided I'm not low enough on Scotch or tequila for now.

Yes Redhook, but a common "fifth" is 0.75 liter, and therefore $2.77. You have to check the size of the bottle to determine how much the "liter" tax will be. But that's actually a good post Redhook, much improved over the majority. Good luck and keep it up!

the State Liter Tax should be 2.82 for a .750 Liter bottle (fifth)... 2.77 is close enough, i dont want to argue...some bottles are cheaper now, some are more expensive... a bottle of Crown Royal SR, was 43 a crack at the state stores, its 48 now....5ths of Smirnoff are actually cheaper...

Last week @ the liquor store my half gallon of cheap [Bleeeeep!] R&R was $24.95.This Friday @ Costco it was $21.53.So for now it's OK but it needs to come down with competition to around $16-18 bucks.Good luck,

Not sure about people caring to much about high taxes on their booze, the local Safway near me did over 18,000 dollars in sales on Friday and was on pace to beat that when we were there Saturday afternoon.
