Well, it is almost here! Time for all the ridges to be covered in pumpkins, and for the river valleys to have the booming duck guns going off.

In my usual custom I will work long into the night tonight, untangling the snarl of decoy lines, that we just tossed into a heap in the corner of the barn last winter, in a hurry to get the boat set up for steelheading. I've been running a lot of long-line/clip set ups lately, and they can be a real bitch to untangle.

The young guy who I am taking along on Saturday just called me and he is stoked. I had to remind him that he should be focusing on the football game Friday night. I told him that he will get lots of opening days, but only 4 homecoming games.

What kind of plans do you have for the opener? Traveling somewhere, going fishing to miss the crowds, or hunting your local spot? Share some pics of your opening day memories.

I am hunting a mudflat in Gray's Harbor. I checked my hole last weekend, there were about 2k widgeon feeding in it. I hope they fly
Saturday. Jerky shoot. Looks like the specks aren't around this year which is a bummer, we killed a lot early last year. They taste awesome on the bbq.

This is possible this year.

Heading east to the coulees tomorrow in search of my favorite deer, the muley. It's supposed to rain there on Saturday and I can't ever remember an opening day with rain.

I'm going to skip the process of hanging a deer for a week in a butcher's locker this year and only hang overnight in a carport. Next morning debone - put meat in plastics bags on ice in 2 coolers for that day. Next morning, cut, vac, and freeze.

rigor mortis - word up for weekend.

Taking Hunter out for his deer Saturday.

There were some specks about in September, at least 5.

They are in the valley. I have seen a few groups. They are not out on the salt like they have been the last 5 years.

Heading for Eastern WA for some whitetail/mule deer action. At least hopefully there will be some action. Sounds like numbers are down on the deer herd this year.

Lots of fun planned!

I was just talking to one of my guys who is taking off this afternoon for the potholes. Apparently, it is pretty competitive there. He is leaving at 3 today, and they are going out to camp in the brush behind their duck hole tonight, until the opener on Saturday and Sunday. 3 nights in the brush for a duck shoot!

He asked me when I was leaving for my hunt and I told him about 8 or 9 am on Saturday, depending on when I get done with breakfast.

Got the mountain bike loaded in the truck to get me into some of my favorite blacktail haunts out on the coast. If all goes according to plan...I'll have some fish in the cooler as well.
