I don’t think anyone here is denying that masks offer some level of protection against the virus. I also don’t think it takes a scientist to determine that any type of barrier is better than nothing. With that said, the effectiveness of masks is what is debatable because the very limited science does in fact say masks offer protection against the virus but that it is minimal. I don’t mind wearing masks in certain situations, but in others it certainly is bit extreme and can be an inconvenience.

The problem most people have is the research suggests limited effectiveness at best, yet instead of masks being recommended they are mandated. My guess is there would only be a slightly lower compliance rate if masks were recommended verses mandated. Most reasonable people will wear masks when appropriate and not wear them when it isn’t necessary. People should have the ability to exercise their own discretion instead of being forced to comply with arbitrary rules that are rooted in limited science and do not provide a measurable difference.

Most importantly to note, mask effectiveness is maximized through proper usage and hygiene practices. Most people shove the mask in their pocket when not needed and forego washing their hands. They will also touch their masks to adjust without hand washing as well. Practices such as these nullify the benefits the mask is intended to provide.
