Perhaps he knows how it was broken. His fault or not? If his fault I think he should consider it a lesson in rod handling and pay the price by buying a new rod of whatever brand he likes.

If he is certain the breakage was not his fault, then he should carefully read his warrenty. If the warrenty covers breakage not caused by a defect, then he should keep writing to whatever level of the company it takes to get satisfaction.
