Only if you need Professional level stuff like for sound & photography. If you're majoring in those fine arts, I'd say you may need it, but otherwise, you'll be fine.

It's an extra grand, and if you only need it for school, I'd say just get the MacBook. I got one for my wife last spring. I still use my 6 year old iMac but it's due for replacing this coming summer I think.
