Since it seems that the people of Alaska don't want the democratic option, I would suggest that Stevens stay in the race until after he is elected then immediately step down. It's tough to swallow the cost of an additional election, but 6 years of a candidate you disagree with may be harder. For Alaska, with all the federal land and expenses, the choice of a senator may have more ramifications then it does for us. In fact, I think he should promise to resign if elected, but encourage people to still vote the party. I know you don't agree with him or the republicans Todd, but the people of Alaska do. If they don't vote for him, they are forced to elect the opposition. Maybe its self deserving since this was looming, but the way the political system works, it would have been near impossible to get him off the ticket. If he tries to stay in office, I would hope the republicans would lead the vote to toss him out on the first day of the session.
