I was shucking focal length increases(100-400 L),dialing aperture corrections and gunning AI Servo back button focus and did him fairly proud overall on the pass. Depth of field could have been greater in the frame you mention, but I happen to like how crisp the victim is,with the balance of the body somewhat fleeting in it's focus.
Had a few other frames captured as he quartered away to his portside, where you can see a fair portion of his head above the wingbeat, though in actuality I prefer the pic illustrated. Nice light and 6fps+ of frame rate can be very handy in revealing nuances.
As I jumped out of the driver's seat, grabbed my camera from the dash of the boat and tore the lens cover off,I was pretty late to the party. My Dad certainly must have scored mightily with his 5D Mk II and the 70-200L IS F/2.8 he had bolted aboard at the time, though my frame rate trumps his. Would have loved to been on the backdeck, seen him approaching and shot with more thought/preparation. Can't bitch, but given the Air Show,I would have liked to have gotten it all. Beggars can't be choosers, but it still stings a smidge.
I really should be gunning my 1Ds harder,as it yields a pleasing overall warmth IMHO. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.(grin)
