Zeis are better than the Steiners, but will usually run more money. Cabelas has some older models of Zeis for about $699, a great deal for some very good glass.
If you want the very best, and don't mind spending some bucks go with Leica. I have a pair of the 8x32's and they are better than anything of the same size I've ever looked through, and I tested them all before I shelled out the bucks. If you want the big stuff (high power) the 15x56 Swarovski's are also excellent - but make sure you get a tripod adaptor. If you don't you will get dizzy and not gain the benefit of the power/clarity. I bought a set last year for blacktail hunting and they were worth the money.
