The term "backtrolling" down here is kind of used wrongly. Usually it just means trolling with the bow in front, like you would do with a kicker, at least around the Sacramento area.

If that's what you are planning the 80# thrust will be good for you, it's what I have on my boat.

If you mean real backtrolling (with the transom upriver) up at Woodsen or Hamilton city, then it'll still work, but might not be enough for very long. Also, with the bow mount you'll get spun around if you are really backtrolling.
