Finally got to go chase turkeys (the bird, not my bosses). Saturday had a tom come in but I didn't shoot as I did not know he was in range. Corrected that by using my rangefinder on Sunday. Got up at 5, dressed and in the blind by 5:30 and the bird was dead at 5:50. Nice jake. Used my Great Uncle's Remingiton Auto (Browning patent). Don't have the exact date of manufacture but from I can find it was pre-1915.

It cooked up pretty good too. Already planning for next spring and looking for more gear like calls and a jake decoy.

As with any outdoor pursuit, the amount of gear that comes with an obsession is pretty impressive lol.

Don't ignore the fall season...it's four months long and you can shoot for more wink

Took SkyGuy to my turkey zone last week, he also shot his first one! Birds were actually pretty scarce, but I shot a double on the only two toms I saw all week, and Skyley's bird was the only one he saw, so at least we maximized our opportunities!

Fish on...

I will be looking into the Fall. Down where I hunt deer I always saw turkeys and they weren't all that scared or me. I don't know if they could distinguish between my bow and if I was carrying a scattergun. Nice to learn though.

It's only been a couple years but I went back down in December. Same locations and a flock of more than 30 dropped in at first light. Shoot one when they came in range. When I went to tag hime there three more gathered around him. They walked off about 10 yards and stood there. Rest of the flock just ambled across the pasture and kept feeding.

I know turkeys aren't always this non-smart but it is fun. I missed all of last year because few birds were around and then family crises intervened. Missed this spring for the same sort of issues. Hope things are sorted for the fall.

This spring the birds were really talkative in my spot, so that was fun. Had quite a few conversations, and for two toms it was the last conversation they ever had wink

SkyGuy got his two on a double on the first evening.

We followed our four bird limit up with a nice box of walleye, so the spring cast and blast was successful.

Last fall I got to do something I may not ever get to do again...shot a quadruple. Two for three on the first volley, popped in two shells and both of them hit home. The last one was at 65 yards, so I guess those $10 a pop TSS shells for my .410 were worth it!

Good luck this fall, it was a really mild winter in NE Washington so the survival this year is going to be stupid good, there will be a lot of birds the next couple of seasons (not that there weren't already a ton of 'em).

Fish on...

Todd

Some friends of mine pulled off single-shot doubles. Kinda funny stories. But no quads. I did get a triple on ducks once.

I got some of those TSS to try on my next trip. I just can't imagine a .410 on turkeys. But you and some others I know seem to do well and at what seems like really long range.

That turkey and wallet sounds like a great eating trip.

Will be nice to have some big broods come off this spring. Forecasts point to a dry summer which may be accompanied with fire.
