Anybody ever use cut plug herring under a float for springers? If so is it productive?

Iv never done that. I wonder if you could get any action on the bait that way? Or would you just run a whole hering and sort of mooch it thru a drift? Interesting.

Never done that or heard of it before, but I certainly have pounded them with bobbers and eggs/shrimp!!!

Sounds like it's worth a try to me. Springers are real suckers for fresh bait. You could probably use some of your herring add a little shrimp, roll it up into a spawn sack and float fish it also.
Speaking of springers and float fishing, I've got to share. I have gone up to the Vedder quite a few times and seen guys using nothing but multi colored yarn (see the article in the last STS by Dave Vedder) below a float and just hammer em. Combo's of pink, forrest green (not chartruese) red and sometimes yellow. Alomost always at least 3 colors. This is really finesse float fishing as the springers just mouth it and let it go, very few bobber takedowns or even wiggles sometimes. Cheap, easy and worth a try.

Funny that you ask,why yes I have thrown the big bobber & herring combo out for springers. A couple of years ago on the hogline at the mouth of the Lewis we were anchored up fishing for springers. Fishing was slow so I decided to throw out a bobber/herring rig for kicks. Measured the depth by dropping the rig to the bottom by the side of the boat which was about 8 ft. deep, tied on my bobber stopper around the 7-foot mark and tossed it out the back. I was laughed at and heard numerous snickering from the nearby Anchored boats. 10 min. later the bobber dove down and I happily landed and released a 15# pound wild buck steelhead. Nobody laughed at me anymore.

That was are only bite for the day. I'm sure a springer would bite that rig, I'll give it a go again someday.

Keep your hooks sharp!
