Hey Rich-
It is very easy...find a nice plume that has a thin long stem and nice fibers. Tie it in by the tip and wrap forward (if you are tying the maribou just at the head, wrap each wrap just in front of the previous...if you are palmering a whole body give more room between each wrap...as you are wrapping, pull the fibers back with one hand so you get nice even wraps and so that maribou flows back and doesnt clump. It also helps to wet the maribou and slick it back.

If you want a lighter dressed pattern, strip one side of the plume...if you want a fuller dressed pattern, tie in by the butt and palmer a saddle hackle before you tie in the marbou (provides a base for the maribou).

Just do EXACTLY what Sparkey describes. You'll see what he means when you sit down in front off your vice.

It sometimes helps to spit on your fingers, the slicked-back marabou looks pretty ugly but will fluff back out when dry.

ALSO...

If the stem of the plume is to thick to wrap toy can, if you are careful, cut the feather in half lengthwise.
Also if you have problems with the feather twisting on you as you wrap it you can "fold" the feather.
To do that attatch the feather by the tip as normal then but the butt end in your hackle pliers. Then with the blade of your scissors stroke the top fibers of the hackle at the stem of the feather. This will fols the hackle so that the fibers from both sides of the hackle form a "V" 60 degrees apart as opposed to being 180 degrees apart..

Also any haclkles with brittle stems like marabou should be held in place by a ribbing of oval tinsel. This will make the fly last much longer...

hope at least some of that makes sence...
