Did two turkeys over the weekend. One with peanut oil and one with veg. Both were great! Just be cautious when lowering initially into the oil and fry 4 min/lb between 310 and 340 degrees. Check internal temp to insure it's done (160 degrees). The oils other than peanut will not last as long but will be able to be used multilple times as long as you do not overheat it (350+) and filter it after each use..Good luck...P

I think the main reason for peanut oil is that it it can withstand higher temps than other oils,it won't get a nasty burnt taste.

evil As stated, watch that the oil does not drip over the sides. NWCN just had a live demonstration with two firefighters showing how dangerous it can be. It became a towering inferno. Don't place it on or around anything that can catch fire. Be wise and enjoy! smile

What's the point of cooking turkey in a manner that yields no gravy?

The only help I can give is like said above.

It can be dangerous., so make that a number 1 concern.

As far as the oil, last year Costco had 3 varieties in bulk, much cheaper than the store.
(they use quite a bit) $$$$$

It is good though!!, gravy is easy nowadays rolleyes no worries on that!!

My family has been deep fryin em for years in Louisiana, something a little different is good IMO.

Good Luck
Be Safe!!

Hope you enjoy it!!

Go to Cash and Carry they have other oils that are good Cotton seed oil is a good one.Make sure to put your turkey in the pot and cover it with cold water till it covers the bird by 2inches then mark that level on the pot remove the water dry the pot good, dry the bird season and inject it with marinade heat the oil to 350 deg. turn off the burner lower the bird into the hot oil
once the bird has been in the oil and it has settled down then crank the burner back up and cook at 350 deg at 3 minutes per pound and enjoy!!!! beer

Perfect timing on the topic. I was thinking about getting a fryer today and giving it a shot tomorrow. Is this a safe bet or should I let the woman cook as usual and try on a different day. Are there any brands of fryers that are better then others? Anything that I should look for? What kinda prep do you do with the turkey. Does it get a rub or anything? Any other info would be great. Thanks for the help guys/Aunty M. Have a great turkey day beer

I've had a few deep fried turkeys and they were excellent -but!- not as good as the way I usually cook em. Usually throw em on the weber w/lottsa woodchips, gravy turns out most excellent (use the drippings from the drip pan strategically placed under the bird)w/shallots and madeira wine. Too labor intensive tho (plus it takes way too long) so now I jus let the ol lady cook it in the oven while I "wake up" ma taste buds w/a few cold ones an sum football. Can't recommend the barbecue method enough. Tried the smoker one year but like the results from the weber better. IMHO the deep fried is just a fad but tasty none the less.

Happy turkey day to all

Sincerely,
Roger

We are doing the turkey in the oven tomorrow for the first time in 25 years, has always been on the Weber. We put it in a foil pan with a can or two of chicken broth, lots of hickory chips on the fire, like the man says, great gravy and wonderful leftovers. The one this year is too big to fit.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tried to buy a turkey deep fryer at COSTCO yesterday only to be told that their fryer had been recalled due to some sort of safety issue. Some of you folks may want to check with COSTCO.
