Todd,
I took the following from JGrizzle to be a reference to the lack of skill/effort involved in flossing as a justification for why it's wrong/not fishing/etc:
"Its that way because some people apreciate the carnage of hooking a fish and feeling the bend of the rod more than than the effort/skills that it takes to get to that point. People who use "prescision snagging" are just looking for a way to achieve the gratification of multiple ideas being used in unison to achieve catching a fish, without using their own critical thinking. For me, the gratification of all my knowledge and experience coming together, to entice a strike from a fish is why it is so appealing to me. The fight from the fish is a reward from my effort, and evidence that all that effort contributed to my reward. Flossers are looking for the gratification with little to no prerequisite effort."
Also, I'd think goggle/fillet knife spearfishing would involve quite a lot of "fair chase!"
I think spearfishing, gillnet fishing, and angling is all "fishing" even if it's not all sportfishing. At any rate, whatever you call it "fishing" or "sportfishing" or "snagging" doesn't really determine whether it's right/wrong/sporting/ethical/legal/etc.

Maybe I should have included that because they are a looking for the gratification with little thinking envolved, doesn't mean they achieve it.
And it doesn't take much fuckking skill. People who call that skill are fooling themselves. How good you snag is determined by leader length, rod length, and how often you have to tie up.
If learning to contort your body in new ways while you play a fish is considered a skill, then I guess it would envolve some.

Both get satisfaction and pleasure from their method of fishing. Kinda silly to take the discussion any further, as "fooling" a poor defenseless fish really isn't morally "better" than flossing, even if ya'll want it to be. We have a winner! The voice of reason steps in. Great point AuntyM - couldn't agree more. Pretty much sums up how I feel and the motivation for my original post. 'Nuff said. Agreeing with Aunty just lowered the bar. It's official......Your an idiot.

Doc, this is kinda splitting hairs here but I don't think your hangback method should be mentioned on a flossing thread and I wouldn't even use the words "floss" and "hangback" in the same sentence. Flossing implies that the fish is an unwilling biter and the fish you catch with your hangback method are obviously pursuing your offering.
Ike Clearly, the fish commits to the offering, but from a technical perspective, a "floss" mechanism is what seals the deal for an outside-in hookup. What do you suggest I call it? I agree with you that the term "hangback flossing" does tend to alienate a lot of folks into rejecting the method's legitimacy. It really does need a better more universally accepted label.

"Hangback" is good enough...it's the same with the long worms, and the extended hook on the spoon...corner of the jaw, most the times.
Fish on...

Flossers can't fool a fish any more than they can fool a sport fisherman.

Is it OK to floss for trollers, or troll for flossers?
I STILL don't know where the floater stop goes on the bobber.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

I don't think snaggers get enough credit for their innovative body english while playing a fish. I've never seen such finesse. It seems like they've mastered the art of curling up in a ball and sticking their rod under water. I wish I looked like I was having an orgasm everytime I hooked a fish. I hear bending over and leaning to one side helps turn the fish. An absolutely fantastic and poetic image. It resembles the poetry of a perfect spay cast.

Come on, grizzle...you don't "spay" a cast...you "spay" a dog!
As I've said before...if you are fishing in a manner that you feel the need to exclaim "Look! Got him right in the mouth!" every time you bring a fish in that isn't hooked in the ass, then you are likely fishing in a retarded manner, or in a retarded place...or most likely...
Both.
Fish on...
Todd

Wow! I get away for the day to catch some herring for the upcoming ocean season and all this chaos took place. The only problems I have with Flossers/Snaggers is they consider themselves Fishermen and the biggest problem I have is they consider themselves a Steelheader. They have no idea what a Steelheader is and what the definition of sport fishing is.... Most are too ignorant to ever figure it out either, kinda like beating a dead horse! After reading all 9 pages of this crap, these are absolutely my thoughts on flossing as well. I did get my rocks off by getting up to 75 pieces of herring in a single throw with a cast net today though.
