You know, if you think about it, if we all made it a common practice to take pics of every convenient license plate every time we head off to the river, it would only take a short time for tweakers to get the idea. No doubt we have all walked right on by the bastards waiting for their chance. They might think twice if they know they are photo'd.

We need some young ambitious guy to do like in S. America and hang out at the parking area and watch tow rigs and trailers for say, $2.00 per rig per day. You pay him your money, and he writes down your plate numbers and keeps an eye on things. He'll need to have a cell phone and coverage, but just being there would keep tweakers moving on.

I saw this in Peru over 10 years ago, and it's common outside all major restaurants and shopping areas. There aren't enough police, and if there is no parking area "watcher", bad things happen. It was cheap; it works there. Might work here.

Sounds like a good retirement job, sit at a launch for 5 bucks a rig and hide in the bushes and wait, bonus from the rig owners if you catch one!

I would think that would be a realistic extension of service for a shuttle operator- ten extra bucks and he will watch the vehicles?

I'd pay it.

I hear that in Third World countries when you pay that kind of fee, it's actually more of a shakedown...since the ones you are paying are the ones who are also the thieves...they just won't break into your schit since you paid them "protection money".

Fish on...

Todd,

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I think some of the "protection" guys are former car prowlers who discovered they actually make more cash by watching cars than by breaking into them, stealing things, and then fencing them for a fraction of their value. Most were teenagers when I was there.

Should be easy enough to do. I have a friend that does that very thing with his house security(he has acreage and lives in the country)......a couple strategically placed cameras with motion sensors. When tripped, they e-mail the pics immediately to his cell phone. Pretty f'n cool when he demonstrated it for me. No reason it wouldn't work on a rig too.

That sucks but it could have been worse. I hope they Get caught. Down in OR on the Wilson this takes place quite often as well. I now leave a Ziplock bag with $5 and a note on the windshield. I have had it taken once, then a week later I hid in the bushes and caught them trying again. Whether it was the same guy who knows, luckily the sheriff dept down there likes to catch these guys to. The consequences are just to light.
