I do. for Salmon and Steelhead, I use 30lb braid. I used to use 20lb braid, but found the diameter was too thin for casting/ line management. I still think the 30lb is thin and often results in weird stuff happening within the spool. Primarily, line getting wrapped around itself/ caught. 40lb seems overkill (and potential for rod breakage), but wondering what folks of PP use?

My setup is Batum Curado 201SF 3/ 30lb Powerpro. I use Maxima Ultragreen as backer. My rod is a Loomis STR1165c. Typically use a 3/8 oz inline weight and a 24g DNE float.

Obviously I am pacifying my fishing needs with these gear questions.

Thanks!

Dends on app. but yep, Salmon ..Level winds all the way. Not over kill for most of the stuff I do. I'll drop to 20 or 30 for float fishing spinnng reels for Steel.

Float fishermen for many years......did all the mono lines.....now only use HI-Vis, power pro.......I can see it, floats well, mends better than mono, no stretch so when that float moves, set that hook.

Break rod?????? wow, loosen that drag.....My rods of choice for "bank fishing" are 13' rods, have 2....both 3 piece, 1 is a Lamiglas and the other is a Rain Shadow.

Twitching rods.....10' Cabelas Rod or 10 1/2 Shimano....Shimano Stradic spinning reels, again the Hi-Vis line....40 #....My twitching is all done from a boat.

Pitching spinners, plugs or "spoon" fishing......Different rods but still 30 or 40 HI Vis braid......Curado Reels are what I use.

Tight lines, fishable water and "bobber down".......

Yup (of course?). 30 pound high viz line to a lighter leader (which should keep your rods from breaking while fighting fish).

Diawa Viento reels for their "twitching bar" which allows one handed line retrieval even with your arm fully extened upward. If you can still find them, they are great float reels with the line capacity being their only downside. Thanks to Bob for showing me this reel years ago.

The best float fishing reel every made IMO. They are few and far between now, they were replaced by the Megaforce, which is a more pricepoint oriented reel. Who knew bass fisherman would actually invent something useful like a twitchin bar smile

Those Viento's work great. Wish I had picked up another when they were on close-out.

40lb braid for float fishing or jig twitching 50lb braid for bobber dogging.

no rod breakage because im not an idiot and dont have my drag set so tight it will break my rod! and on top of that, i use a leader under my float to whatever i have rigged on there.

oh and i will never use 20lb braid because of the wear the thinner braid has on guide inserts.

anything less then 40lb braid on a bait caster and ive had severe problems with the line burying deep into the spool!!!

super slick 8 brown and green (using both, havent decided which i like more) more abrasion resistant and line slides through the float quicker.

diawa t3, diawa lexa, quantum kvd tour, revo stx, and a shimano curado 200 D series all with braid. as reels break i am switching everything over to mostly diawa, unless someone makes something that can compete.

I'll use baitcaster (either 201SF or Luna) for floats when I'm not using a center pin reel, which I prefer.
Spinning reel on the odd occasion as lure or conditions dictate, but rarely with floats as they afford way too little line control during casting, mending or trotting.
Braid vs mono is a whole nuther debate, but I use mono whenever possible for floats. Braid has some advantages, but they don't outweigh braids disadvantages IMO for float fishing. Mono shock tippet always with braid however. And in either case, Hi-Vis main line all day all the way. Typically use FC sinking shot leaders too.
dos centavos.

One of the above mentioned reels and some 20 or 30lb. pp does it all for me. Sometimes switch to 50 when targeting kings. Phil, sounds like you need some better guides.

Yup! Becuse IMHO I have better line control with a revolving spool reel and $ for $ they have smoother drags then spinners.

Shimano Citica 200E, 30lb PP Hi-vis, 11' custom on a Rainshadow blank, 18" - 48" fluro leader. Works great for me.

Levelwind with 30lb power pro for Steelhead, 10.6 Lamiglas for most winter/coast Steelhead float fishing.

Centerpin for most summer float fishing (small clear rivers).

Seldom use spinning rods for float fishing.

Started out float fishing with a spinning reel and quickly made the switch to a level wind. My favorite setup is a revo stx with 30# sufix 832 on a rainshadow 1264 that I built.

i use one about 99% of the time for salmon, not so much these days for steelhead. most of my bobber tossing for steelhead is with really light gear, where i prefer a spinning rod.

Baitcasters for Salmon on Client rods and spinning reels for steelhead on client rods..........The new Diawas are just sick.....Best spinning reel ever ! For Salmon on baitcasters, 65 lb sufix 832 braid, best braid ever maid and I am a poet and dont even know it..........I will put that in one of my river raps............25-30 lb maxima ultra green leaders and 4/0 or 5/0 owner hooks and that equals about every fish you hook makes it to the net.........................just ask my clients..........

I rarely fish floats, but when I do I use my centerpin rods 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time I always use a levelwind, and never use braid...well, almost never. I have 65# PP on one reel, but it only gets play in a couple places for kings.

The only thing I ever use a spinning reel for is jigging for squid wink

Fish on...

Daiwa Viento and 40 lb PP braid for me, I found the 30 lb too small a diameter & tended to dig in with big fish on. I'll Move the Daiwa up a rod from the 1142 to a Lami 96 JC when targeting bigger fish. Like the Cleardrift floats, great visibility w/ those bright tops. But do run some DNE on occasion.

<< This big boy was on one of Opies GL-2 1082s & some kind of invisa-braid he likes to run. It turned the brute & after a tussle brought em to hand in a respectible amount of time.

Personally I like to run the spinning rod in small water I go w/ XST in 1082 & Stradic 2500, loaded w/ again 40 PP to a small 20 gram Cleardrift.

Works for me. 2cents
