Seems like 1/8 is really popular, but I tend to prefer 1/4 oz jigs to stay down in a lot of the places I fish (e.g., the Skykomish).

And because there has been quite a controversy the last couple weeks with some jig manufacturers claiming their product photos are being ripped off buy other jig folks... I'll include a shot of taking the shot wink

Few different ways to go about the marabou under the beads dilemma.

I cut my pieces of marabou a little longer than desired, peel the extra off of the top (cut portion of the quill), then slide the peeled portion of the quills under the beads from the bottom of the jig up. Pull into place, trim, glue, post pictures on the internet, then go fishing.

If you can always add spit shot to your leader as well.

Been fish jigs, way before 1997.....1997 was when I retired....early years, lot's of learning;

1. mono line....10 or 12 pounds

2. leader....different brands

3. I actual started with "bucktail jigs" from Cabelas. They were BIG 3/8 or 1/2 or bigger....cause that's what was available.....but they caught summer run, well some.

4. Floats/bobbers--tried them all....backer rod, round cork, red/white one, and many others.

5. Andre line, Hi Vis 10 - 12, I used for 7 or 8 years....I could see it and try to mend..........lmao, when I remember those days

6. I did have a few 10.5' rods, Shimano and Shakespeare, I used with different model spinning reels.

Current times...

1. I never put split shot on the leader.......can't tell you the amount of fish lost because of leader damage.

2. Only use high Vis PP, 40#

3. Clear Crystal Piker Floats

4. Stradic spinning reels.....a cut above some lessor Shimano models.

5. Jigs-----summer run size....mostly 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 but some 1/8....nothing larger.

6. Jigs-----winter run size..... 1/16 and 1/8

7. I fish short leaders...... 16 -20 inches.

8. weight above swivel that connects PP to the leader. HINT...think hollow core lead!!!!! I know that I used in 1st in my area.....now many others use it.

9. Same float for the past 4 years...I might lose some jigs and do.....but because of the PP 40#....from the swivel up, no loss.

sorry its so long....but some things need to be said.

10. Rods of choice for summer run, from shore, 13' Lamiglas or Rain Shadow...both AWESOME and fun rods......NOT BOAT rods......

Never have had a problem with losing fish due to adding split shot to my leader. Perfer inline weights to hollow pencil leader.
That is the fun thing about jig fishing,. There are lots of ways to get it done.

I've just been using a couple big 'ol splitshot above the swivel recently. Not worried about line damage to the 30lb power pro, and I can adjust the amount of weight without retying anything if need be.

I like using sliding trout egg sinkers that slide up and down the main line. When using light line having the lead move up and down the line can take some of the pressure off your leader when the fish shakes its head or jumps.

A really straight forward weight setup like this that I picked up in BC is simply using hollow core pencil lead cut to size with the main line right through the middle. You can pinch it if you like or not if you want it to slide or not. It gets down fast and i think it is less spooky to fish.

Ahhhh, thats the ticket!!

Thanks twicher, I have a crap load of those & was trying to figure out how to lock them in place on the shank as they have that over-sized hole.

1/16 oz for super low/clear water, though in all honesty, i usually stick with 1/8 oz even in low/clear conditions. 1/8 oz jigs are the most widely used and the best all around choice for sure. When big native fish arrive or there is dirtier water and i need a big profile jig; It's 1/4 oz dumbbell heads with eyes for me. I tie them big and fluffy with lots of either marabou, rabbit hair, or schlappen and LOTS of flash! If i am tying articulated jigs its 1/4 oz or even 3/8 oz jigheads. Then again Mike, you have seen my jig box. wink

Twitch those look pretty dam fishey! Trout beads are cool. I really like the blood dot ones.

Tied hundreds of 1/16, 1/8, & 1/4 oz jigs using 6mm red beads with marabou tails as others have shown. All produced. Hook size does dictate hole size you have to drill out. Experiment a little and you'll find what works.

Well, I have all the materials and I tried to make some tonight but my 3 year old daughter kept cutting the marabou before I could get it under the beads.

I was having a hard time getting them to look "right" anyway, so I will try again tomorrow night when she is not in the garage.
