Good day.

I have been doing a lot of reading in regards to which lines are best for float fishing, the criteria being very buoyant and east to mend. Most articles I have read have expressed that some of the new lines (for instance Berkley Crystal Fireline) are the way to go, however I just picked up a book on jig fishing where a respected author has recommended mono with a float and jig combo when using a level-wind.

Looking for some thoughts on winter time steelheading with a float and conventional reel, would you opt for mono or a buoyant braid?

Thank you.

I use braided for my main line because its easier to mend and has low stretch to help set hook. But I do use mono on bottom half , because it scares fish less. 10-15 ft of mono tied to braided mainline. I use 10-12lb mono . Braided is 20 lb

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

For jig fishing, I normally use a spin rig with mono line dressed with musclin. Green 10-lb test for the most part.

When float fishing bait, I use a slip float on braid and a casting rig most of the time.

Just a personal preference thing. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Power Pro His Vis......40#.........scare fish. not that I see!!!! I have gotten many people to change from "sinking mono", ugh, to float on top of the water, braid........40# has almost done away with the wrap around the tip.

My float is on the 40# Power Pro, so no float have been lost in 4+ years....I do use 18" - 24" of Ultra Green, 8 #, to tie the jig on.

Mending is important to good "float fishing" so I treat my Power Pro line with floatant.......I DO NOT TREAT ANY OF THE POWER PRO LINE BELOW THE FLOAT.............and only treat about 40' above the float.

There are some "die in the wool mono users" but if they fish around me, very often......some change.

Ohh..........a level wind reel is not the way to go!!!!! I see people try all the time, back lashes.....just tough to fish a level wind, with light weight.

Berkley Nano-fill, by far the best float fishing line on the market. Power pro was great when it first came out, but so was the Model T. ;-)

Gotta agree with Daniel

I still like mono, but when I want to use braid Nano-fill is hard to beat.

I like 14# fireline crystal for summers. Have been wanting to try nano-fill after the rave reviews.

All I use now is Nanofil. Most of the braids including Power pro are to limp and I don't like to use heavy braid to overcome it. Nanofil has more body so it does not tip wrap and even the lightest 12 lb nanofil will float high and mend easy. Another plus is that in the winter it resists freezing. The water falls off of it before it can get to your guides. Pretty cool plus!

The only downside is you cannot use it on a casting reel. I have not tried it personally but it might be because it flys off the reel so fast that braking systems on baitcasters cannot keep up. I do use it on my centerpin reel and its awesome!

Try it I will......just need to use up the 1500 yds. of 30# and 40# Power Pro.

Did look at it, Nanofil, in Cabelas yesterday. Change is something, I like to do.......just need to get some people fishing my area, to see Nanofil work.

3:55 a.m. Heading out, gotta get my rock!!!!!!! Retired life is great!!!!
