Finally finished the major components of my .308 AR build. Got the Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44mm scope for a great deal today. This is what I will kill something with this year. Just needs some sling swivels and a sling. (and a suppressor)

The upper on this one is .308 Win, 20". The 6.5 Creedmoor is next, but I'll only build an upper for that.

First victim should be spring bear. After that, maybe coyotes. Need to get it sighted in first though.

Weight on the rifle was 9.6 pounds. Comparable to my M1 Garand.

I still prefer blued steel & walnut, but that thing looks lethal. Who made your barrel?

My AR builds tend to be pretty plain jane. Nothing hanging off of them that increases weight, just stuff designed to get the job done.

Have a YHM ultralight stock on my varmint AR, the cheek weld when using the 6-24× is terrible.

I need to trade it off on a regular A2 stock, rifle weight is 9.5 lbs so no ultra light stock is going to help that gun much.....lol

Nice build, Andy. Makes me want to go out and shoot my AR-10. There is something uniquely satisfying about moving the metal at 200 yards with a suppressed AR-10. Ok, maybe not. My shoulder still hurts. Gonna be a while until I shoot again.



Why do you perceive it to be an advantage for a hunter to hunt with an assault weapon? Because it looks intimidating to you or your knowledge is lacking on modern firearms? For the most part, assault weapons in the field tend to be heavy, bulky, and not very accurate, compared to a high end hunting rifle. A far ways from being an ideal hunting firearm.

Regardless of what weapon Andy uses, he WILL kill something. This just happens to be his next choice of weapon. If it makes him happy, than who are we to judge. One shot, one kill. Either way, BooBoo never did stand a chance against Andy......

To add, this is wet Western Washington. Wood stocks suck here. 99.9% of shots are going to be sub 200 (max) unless on shooting on the dry side. A 20" or even a 16" barrel shoots just fine in these dense woods and has less barrel length to hang up in said woods. Plus, it's just fun.

BUIS is on there because I can. Humped my 12 pound Savage 10T last year up and down every damned hill where we hunt. It is lighter than last year's weapon. A few ounces is nothing to me.

No issues with Ace skeleton stocks for me. They fit me fine because I have freakishly long arms. The biggest issue is scope mount height. I have 4 rifles with these on them, and after that it is 3 Magpul collapsible stocks, an A2 and a Sig brace. Ace is light and fits me.

I think you and I need to go shooting some time.

JG, You know me. I am not a conformist and I know your were kidding. The boys and I have been killing animals with AR's for years. Body count is only going to get higher. My goal is to be the poster child for hunting big game with AR's. Take is easy Paker, we don't want JG to put you in timeout.


Nick, My goal is consistent shooting out to 400 yards. We have a steel range that goes to just under 600 near McCleary. I'll be practicing with it this spring and summer. It is my new training rifle, so it should see a lot of rounds down range this spring and summer.

Best thing is that 10 round mags are $16-20, while 10 round mags for my bolt gun are $45-50, the same as 4 round mags.

I have on order a Kimber Mountain Ascent in .300 Win Mag that I want to turn in to a long range shooter. I figured what the hell, might as well treat myself to a truly exceptional rifle, as it was a birthday gift to myself. Also picked up an AAC .300 Blackout and Eotech....because it matched up nicely with my AAC suppressor.

Been looking at the Leupold Mark 4 series of scopes. Just don't have that spare $1500-$2500 laying around.

Sadly, I've come to conclude that it's probably a necessity if one wants to see a target at 600+ yards.

You can accomplish a lot with a $500 Vortex. One retired Marine in our group was pinging the 600 yard target mercilously with a 16" 5.56 M4gery. He was using an ACOG. $900 for a 6-24x50 Vortex Viper PST would save a ton of money for ammo.

We're not shooting bullseye a or X's. We are shooting steel plates.

Those newcomers based on the .404 Jeffery case are quite somethin'.
A co-worker brought in a .300 RUM cart and we placed it next to one of my .300 Weatherbys.
My Roy looked skinny compared to that RUM.

There are different variations of it, but the B&C reticle is perfect for my 300 Roy.
That fat 30mm tube makes my one inchers look under-nourished.
