In Nor Cal there is the Mad river. Flossing became super popular in the late 80s. At one time it was a vibrant river ,and at times it can be good for beautiful wild steelhead, though few fish in it's stretches above the hatchery. It has a small run of pink salmon, runs of coho and chinook, hatchery winter steelhead and wild summer fall and winter steelhead. Most people only know the lower, levied, urban hatchery stream. There are many river like this. Evo I hear you,if you are willing to hike a little and get away from the knuckleheads, good fishing in relative solitude can await you.
