Burlyne (Hurley) is a very good friend of mind. We fish together all the time! Burlyne was the person who taught me how to tie jigs about 4 years ago. The jigs in my pictures were my own inventive ideas and style. Both Burlyne and I share jig information, supplies and jig molds. At times when he out of town, I will tie jigs for many of his customers (I am always on call for him when he needs help). Personally, I don't think that there is a jig out there that Burlyne hasn't made or tied up at one time or another. That guy is really good and extremely competitive! That's why we fish together so often. He thinks like I think...fishy!
A couple of years ago, both Burlyne and I were fishing in one of our local small rivers together (the fish were in big trouble that day!). He had heard through the grapevine about the bobber and pin trick, and we had decided to see just how good it would work. We both fished the exact same water and holes that day side by side. The only difference between me and Burlyne was that he was using a bobber with the pin trick! I was using the old tooth pick method. At days end, I had lost 5 bobbers and Burlyne had lost 0! That made us both big time believers in the pin theory.
PS, Little ZoZo, have I met you before? I am always fishing with Burlyne, or bs-ing at his house when guys come over there to buy his jigs! I know that you fish Blue Creek a lot, but I almost never fish Blue Cr. (contrary to what many may believe).
Mirco,
I never seem to have much of a problem spooking the fish when I use this jerking method. Oddly enough, the only problems that I ever seem to have when I am using those large cheaters and this trick method is; some stupid steelhead wants to come up and eat my bobber!! Every year, this happens and especially on the summer runs. I know, I could paint the bottoms black, and solve that problem, but I get a real kick out of watching those fish come up and smack that bobber (I call it chumming!). Besides, almost always, the next cast that fish will belong to me!!
Your methods also works good when retrieving your bobbers, but I have found that 90% of time, in the smaller rivers that I fish, you just can't walk down below the point that your jig is snaged, because there is just simply no way to get around all the brush or tree limbs that are always in the way, or you will need to walk in the water to get by them. If you do that, then you really take the chance of spooking the fish.
We need to get together soon and exchange ideas and maybe even catch a fishy or two!!
