Lead Thrower: It sounds to me like you are already an experienced and knowledgeable float fisher. One thought about the differing current speed from top to bottom causing your float to tilt forward a bit. You are absolutely correct in your interpretation of what is happening, as possible solution would be to use less weight and lighter line.

The absolute best float fisherman I know of often fishes with a Thill Turbomaster #3 float and a 1/8-ounce Beaumac jig. This Thill float is so sensitive it will cock right with only the jig for weight. My friend often uses 6-pound test line with this rig. The effect is much less drag than you would get from a big slinky or chunk of pencil lead and a length of 10 to 15 lb test leader. Only drawback is you must fish this with a spinning reel, as it’s too light to cast well with a baitcaster. Naturally you need to use a very slow action, light rod to fish with such light line.
