Here is something that also helps a lot in my float fishing. This is not as important when fishing with jigs, but when you are fishing without a jig incorpate a shot pattern between your float and leader. This is especially helpful in slower pools, it keeps the bait ahead of the float and it is more natural in the water. Use bigger shot at the float and gradually go smaller, there is an un limited amount of patterns but the graduated and the bulk shot pattern are the most common. the bulk shot is just putting all your shot at the leader, also put a couple right under the float to keep it cocked. I only use that when fishing a fast current or a deep pocket. When I bulk shot is when holding back the float is really imoportant.
