Two years ago I was fishing for pinks at Kayak Point out of my drift boat with my wife and then-five-year-old.
I was doing alright casting flies, but the guy in the next boat over was absolutely slaying them with a light spinning rod and pink marabou jigs. I mean just fish after fish. Unfortunately, his buddy couldn't buy a fish. Our hero did everything he could for the poor guy, switching sides of the boat, giving him jigs, I think they may have even swapped rods.
Nothing worked for the poor guy. That's when things got funny, and I hope I can describe this right. I look over and the guy has another fish on. His partner can't even look anymore he's so bummed. So our hero holds his rod close over the back of his partner's head, so that the fighting fish makes the rod repeatedly slap the guy on the top of his head. It took the poor sap a few seconds to realize what was happening to him. I think he thought a bird was attacking him. Talk about adding insult to injury!
I laughed my butt off, mostly because I couldn't believe it had never occured to me. I mean, it just made so much sense. I'm still waiting for the opportunity to try it out. It seems like to make it really pay off you should wait until you're absolutely bricking your partner.
