The officers standard of training is not our determination to make. The offenders would not have been shot if they did not assault the officer. The officer acted in self-defense and had he used a less than lethal option he may have been overtaken by the offenders with the possibility of suffering great bodily harm or death. It's his duty to enforce the law, protect himself and other citizens.

Stealing beer, assaulting civilians and police officers may not be justify lethal force to you, but the officer is applying his standard of training to the situation. It's a shame you don't feel police should be able to protect themselves. Officer deaths have doubled in the last year because amazingly enough criminals do not like them.
