On a fundamental level I want to agree with Oregonian on the idea that everyone should be able to take care of themselves. I could agree IF, all things were equal! If everyone had the same opportunities in life that I had, were faced with the same set of advantages and disadvantages I had. Then I could agree.

The fact of the matter is, that is not the case! I recognize there are times in peoples lives where they need help and they do not have friends and family to turn to. I could say tough luck and turn the other way, but I believe that we will better ourselves and society by helping.

To me the challenge isn't about should we help it is about how do we help? How do we prevent people from perpetuating poverty from one generation to the next? Isn't that where discussions really ought to be focused? Again it is where the Republican party fails on a fundamental level for me. In my mind you cannot hold the bible in such high regard and turn your backs on those that need help! It is hypocracy in it's worst form!

Getting down off soapbox now...
