It's true that Slavery was on its way out well before the civil war began as the cost of buying and keeping slaves no longer made economic sense, the purpose of the war was not slavery, it was about the Southern states not wanting the federal government telling them what to do.

I guess both sides felt it was worth dying for their cause since 620,000 americans killed each other related to differences of opinion. I really doubt they would have risked their lives to abolish slavery, as it is a selfless cause, which generates no wealth and nobody would do that then or now.

You can't trust how history is written or told, because only the winners get to tell their story, the history we know is nothing more than a half truth at best.
