I agree that guides aren't getting rich and have often wondered why anyone would want to do it.

I guess it is the notion some have that it is expected that bothers me.

If someone puts out extra effort for me I certainly acknowledge it financialy and verbaly.

I do not however, tip someone because the tools of their trade are expensive, the nature of their job is demanding or it is expected.
