I think you're right to say that most Americans don't like Socialism and would normally call for a rope anytime someone utters the word. I don't share your confidence that most people will recognize the coming shift before it's too late. I figure if we can elect someone like Trump to the White House, it's a safe bet most of us don't understand history's many lessons about extreme nationalism and isolationism. Why, then, should I expect my fellow citizens to recognize the warning signs that we're on our way to becoming a Socialist republic?

Hence my concern that the proverbial shark-jumping is apparently well underway.

By the way, if you didn't like Obama's policies, you're in for a hell of a bad day when you see what your taxes pencil out like under a true Socialist. He was a mere Progressive.
